Toronto: Magic At
any given moment, Toronto is magical. I love graffiti alley so much I
take most of my tshirt product photos there. Half way between the Gay
Ghetto and Queer West Village is a really amazing place during the
winter time. And the colder it, the better.
Tucked
away below street level is this awesome water garden at the Sheraton
Centre. In summer, you can walk across the bridge and hang out in the
area, in winter it's locked off. Steam rises in
huge waves from the artificial pond and flows over the three levels of
water falls. The warm mist hits the cold air, and hoar frost forms on
everything. It's an amazing thing to see, especially from the Centre
lobby. You can stay warm and watch this magical dance of water and ice
for hours.
Radio: Blue Snowball
Keeping
with the snow theme, I recently purchased this Blue Snowball
USB microphone. The quality of this mic soars above the headset I was
using. This mic has three settings: one for up close and personal, one
for really really up close and personal, and one for garage band. Okay,
that isn't really what they are called, but that's what they do.
I won't be doing any crooning any time soon, but you
will hear a dramatic improvement in the radio broadcasts and the CD
recordings from now on.
I sure hope you listen, at least once in a while, to
either of my radio stations. You can hear women performers and bands on LesbianFunWorld
Radio and my spoken meditations, and words of Goddess worship on SilverFox
Radio (yes, I am the Silver Fox). It's free, although you do
have to sign up and listen to their advertisements.
Contest: Winner
Our
congratulations to Ulla from Denmark, the winner of our inaugural free t-shirt draw.
Ulla was kind enough to send along a snapshot of herself in the
Be Yourself
t-shirt she won. Ulla, thanks for entering!
If you haven't entered
for our draw for this month's t-shirt, the fabulous Speak Act
Transform design, then drop by the website and give it a try!
T-Shirts: New
We have some great new t-shirts available, some in their
own online store. This one, "Why do we so often become
the kind of person we hate?" comes from Sue Wonders (my LFW riff on
life). I wrote it after a hard day at work in which I purposefully was a
bitch to someone. I was fully aware of what I was doing, and I thought,
you know, I'd really hate it if someone did this to me. That made me
wonder what it is about us humans that causes us to behave in ways we
know are petty, stupid or cruel. There are people we hate in this world:
bullies, cowards, bitches, jerks, whatever. They are us, but I wonder
why. Yes, it's a little existential, but it's a vital philosophical,
spiritual and emotional question.
I've
re-created a classic, What part of lesbian don't you understand? This
features rainbow colours for lesbian. It comes from a sense of
frustration that people don't get it. I remember telling one woman I was
a lesbian (she'd already met Kelly). She said that was fine until a man
came along. No, I explained, Kelly and I would be together forever. She
frowned and said it was nice that I had such a good friend. Arrgh! What
part of lesbian don't you understand? Don't negate and belittle who I am
just because it makes you feel a little more comfortable.

Lifestyle: Wine
I
love red wine (although it does ruin a t-shirt if you spill it!), and I
love affordable red wine even more. Normally, I avoid Canadian wines as
many follow the German traditions of wine making, and I don't care for
German wines. But Pelee Island's Cabernet Franc VQA 2007 is a big
exception. It's a great tasting, drinkable and affordable wine on sale at
the LCBO (liquor store) for under $10. That's a big bonus, as far as I
am concerned!
Cab franc is a casual wine, good for your basic
hamburger dinner, or some not-too-spicy take out. We ate it with grilled
seasoned pork chops, and it provided a nice contrast without being
overwhelming. We were both pleased with it, and it's a safe buy for
casual dinners with un-snobby people.
If you're a novice at wines, Pelee Island is the name of
the winery, and the wine is made up of 2 grape varieties: cabernet
(pronounced cab-er-nay) and franc (sounds like frawnk). The VQA stands
for "Vintners Quality Alliance". A vintner is a wine maker, so
this is just an association of wine makers. I've had good and bad VQA
wines, so don't think of it as a 100% reliable guarantee of
quality.
No, there is nothing lesbian about this wine (LOL!)
