From the director of Camila and Miss Mary comes this unconventional story of 17th-century Mexican poet and nun Sor Juana inez de la Cruz. Confined to a prison-like cloister during the Spanish Inquisition, Sister Juana's passionate, philosophical poems become the "rage" amongst both the rich and poor, causing problems for the virtually sealed-off convent and prompting an intimate relationship (though mostly through bars) with a beautiful vicereine (Domenique Sanda). The film is elegant and intelligent, though the two women's relationship which is hinted at never goes beyond lingering glances. Based on the novel by Octavio Paz.
