This good-natured sex romp follows the sexually insatiable exploits of a bisexual swingin' married couple who wager bets on who can seduce who in a set amount of time. The calculating pair set their eyes and loins on a naive couple with the emphasis on same sex couplings. In action quite explicit for its time, their mission is accomplished and, voila, two more queer converts!
Shot in 1972, the film is rife with period details. Cal Culver (aka gay porn star Casey Donovan) brings his blond good looks to the film complete with a red bandanna around his neck. And his partner in lust, Gerald Grant has around his neck a genuine relic, something never seen (except perhaps in a museum of the sexual revolution) a vial of poppers. Something I've always loved about this film is the phenomenal editing in the crucial, final lovemaking scene. As the two couples pair off, man to man and woman to woman, the camera alternates between the two couples and one can't always tell which couple you're seeing. It's really quite genius and I think a political statement of sorts by the filmmaker. In the restored version, the sex is slightly more hardcore with full-on oral sex and a great 69 shot. The print is now gorgeously clean and crisp. With its period music, fashions and hot sex non-simulated gay sex, Score is just that, a score.
